How
do I know if I need a new roof?
Leaking roofs,
poor drainage, and clogged gutters and downspouts can lead to significant
water damage inside your home. To help determine if you need a new
roof, Sprout Roofing will conduct an inspection.
Outside
Roof Inspection
Inspecting a roof from outside is very simple. All that is needed
is a pair of binoculars and a viewing point that is unobstructed
by other objects and trees. Following is a checklist of problem
signs you can look for during an outside roof inspection.
* Blistered,
curled or split shingles
* Loose or missing shingles or tiles
* Loose nails
* Exposed nails that could cause leaks
* Dark patches on asphalt shingles and/or large amounts of granules
in the rain gutters that show the granular coating is wearing away
* Sagging either on the ridges or in the center of the roof
* Broken or loose shingles at the ridge lines and hip lines
Rusty or corroded metal flashing and loose shingles in the valleys,
plumbing vents or near chimneys. It may be necessary to remove excess
debris and leaves to inspect thoroughly and lots of leaf debris
can cause damage to these sensitive areas of the roof.
* Overflowing gutters or excess water pooling near the foundation
of the house
* For flat roofs, look for blisters, depressions near vent pipes,
separations in flashing, pooling water and clogged drains.
Indoor
Roof Inspection sometimes an interior inspection is needed...
* Sagging decking between the rafters. If the decking is sagging
or deteriorating, the decking will also require replacement when
a new roof is installed.
* Outside light that can be seen through the roof. This may not
be a problem on shake roofs, since the wooden shakes will swell
during the wet months, effectively preventing any leaks
*Signs of water damage or leaking, usually in the form of water
stains or sagging ceilings. This could be due to an active leak
in the roof or to condensation caused by poor ventilation.
* Signs of leaking in the attic - dark spots in the wood, especially
around vents, chimneys, and other holes to the roof. Test dark spots
in the wood with a screwdriver to decide if they are old or current
problems. If the spot is still wet, or if it is soft, the spot is
a current problem. If the spot is dry and hard, it is most likely
an old problem that has been fixed.
If you observe any of the signs listed above, you need roof repairs
or a new roof. Depending on the degree of damage, you can decide
what is best for you and your house. Often the cost of fixing or
replacing a roof is less than dealing with the damage an old roof
can cause to your home.

How long does it take
to replace a roof?
Replacing a
roof is a labor-intensive project and could take anywhere from a
day to 2 or more weeks, depending on the type of roof and the number
of roofers in the crew. The time involved is substantially affected
by the weather, as well. Wind, snow, rain, extreme heat or even
just the threat of one of these and will slow the process considerably.
We take great
care to complete your project in a convenient time frame, but we
cannot control the elements. We will keep you up to date as conditions
change. Careful planning and close project management can reduce
some of the delays caused by bad weather.

What
should I expect during a roofing project?
If you are like
most of our customers, this may be your first experience with a
re-roofing, and you may be wondering what to expect. The following
items are offered to help prevent any misunderstanding after the
work begins.
NOISE,
ETC.
Re-roofing is
a noisy business. You will hear banging, hammering, etc. throughout
the process.
TREES,
BUSHES, FLOWERS AND SHRUBBERY
If you have
low hanging branches over your driveway or roof, some trimming may
be necessary. Our crews will cut back only those branches which
limit their ability to do an efficient job. If you have any bushes,
flowers or shrubbery which need to be protected, please let us know.
We can work together to take the proper precautions to keep your
landscaping looking nice.
LIGHT
FIXTURES, PICTURES, MIRRORS, FANS, ETC.
These items
can fall if they are not firmly attached to the ceiling or walls.
Also, breakable items that are on shelves, tables, etc. should be
placed on the floor. We ask that you check these items to make sure
they are secure.
TEAR-OFF
DEBRIS
When it is necessary
to remove your existing roof, some debris may fall through between
your roof deck boards into your attic or open garage. We suggest
you cover or remove any items that may need protection to avoid
damage.
ACCESS
Please let us
know where you would like us staged (where to place material, park
truck, and keep equipment). Please keep in mind that everything
we use needs to be as close to the house as possible. This will
allow us to complete your roofing project in a timely manner. Please
also ensure all loose animals are properly secured. Although we
cannot be responsible for damage to your driveway, we will attempt
to protect its surface.
SATELITE
DISHES / NON-RELATED PROJECTIONS / MOUNTINGS
Any satellite
dishes that are mounted directly through the roof may need to be
moved to allow us to properly install your new roof. You may need
to contact your satellite company to reset your dish. Lightning
rod systems, weather vanes, or other miscellaneous non-roof related
projections may require disassembly / reinstallation. We will attempt
to as best as possible re-install these items where possible, but
cannot guarantee complete restoration to their original condition
/ location.
HIDDEN
CONDITIONS
Please understand
that the condition of your roof deck cannot be verified until we
remove your existing shingles. It will be necessary to replace any
rotten or broken decking. In that case, it will require an additional
charge unless it has already been figured in your base bid. Any
repairs to your roof deck may conflict with our original schedule
of completion. We strive to keep extra costs as low as possible
for our customers and we always try to show you the area needing
repair prior to performing the work. If you're not able to be home
during the work we can take pictures to prove the necessity of the
additional repairs.

What
is a Green Roof?
The term "Green"
is being used a lot these days but it can have many different meanings.
To us at Sprout Roofing, a Green Roof can take many shapes and combine
many combinations of environmental friendly components and installation
methods. We offer roofing systems which will reduce your energy
bill and thus reduce your carbon footprint due to energy usage.
We offer roofing products which are manufactured and installed in
Environmentally friendly ways. The TPO roofing products we use for
example are manufactured without any Chlorine. When they are installed
in place of an old black rubber roof with proper insulation, the
energy savings can be drastic.
This industry
and our "green roofing" efforts are relatively new and
each of our customer's projects are unique. We will work with you
to make your project as Green as possible and to save you as much
Green ($) as possible.

Are
all windows the same?
We install many
different styles of windows, made by different manufacturers and
we customize each window installation depending on your specific
circumstances. In order to provide you with the best quality windows,
we will inspect each of your existing windows and order custom sized
replacement windows. Our installer will customize all preparations,
insulation, trim, wrapping and other details so that each window
looks great and performs perfectly.
We install windows
made by a variety of manufacturers, but only of the highest quality.
In the replacement window industry, a high quality window is not
significantly higher priced than a lower quality window. We will
not sacrifice our reputation or your trust by using a poor quality
window for the sake of saving a few dollars in the short term. We
will be glad to explain this in more detail when we inspect your
windows and talk with you about your project.
